Spain-Italy Tie in the EVOOLEUM Awards fifth edition's TOP10

The exclusive TOP10 of the V International Awards for the Quality of Extra Virgin Olive Oil EVOOLEUM Awards, promoted by Mercacei Publishing Group and AEMO, has registered, for the first time since its creation, a tie between EVOOs from Spain and Italy, with five representatives of each one. Don Gioacchino Grand Cru, from Azienda Agricola Sabino Leone, holds first place in an edition that includes extra virgins from other countries such as Greece, Croatia, Israel, Portugal, Tunisia, Turkey and China -the great novelty this year-.

The presence of five Italian EVOOs and another five Spanish EVOOs in the prestigious EVOOLEUM Awards TOP10 does nothing but confirm the hegemony of these two countries in the EVOO world, not only in terms of production, but in terms of quality. The two EVOOs that occupy the first places in the virtual podium of the best extra virgins in the world register the same score, 96 points out of 100, and only decimals have tipped the scales towards the exceptional single-varietal Coratina from Azienda Agricola Sabino Leone. A variety, the coratina, which confirms its power -and excellence- by placing no less than three juices among the 10 best in the world, as well as the Picual from Jaén -the usual monopolizer of this TOP10-, followed by the Hojiblanca, with two representatives.

After Don Gioacchino Grand Cru, Best Absolute EVOOLEUM, the jury has recognized another Italian extra virgin of Coratina, Schinosa, from Aziende Agricola di Martino, S.A.S., as the second best EVOO in the world; completing the podium the Hojiblanca Cordovan EVOO Rincón de la Subbética Altitude, from Almazaras de la Subbética, S.L.U. (95 points). Below is another single-variety Coratina from Italy, Monini Monocultivar Coratina -winner in the 2018 edition-, by Monini S.p.A. (95 points); followed by an EVOO of the Itrana variety, Quattrociocchi Olivastro, from Quattrociocchi Americo Oleificio dei Fiori, S.R.L (95 points), one of the historical Italian producers of extra virgin.

The EVOOLEUM TOP10 is completed with the blend of Italian varieties Pruneti Intenso, by Frantoio Pruneti, S.R.L. (94 points); the Picual juices Claramunt Extra Virgin Picual, from Olivar de la Monja, S.L., and La Pandera Premium, from S.C.A. Sierra de la Pandera -both with 94 points-; the EVOO of the Hojiblanca variety Al Alma del Olivo Hojiblanca, from Olinexo, S.L. (94 points); and another Picual, Finca Varona La Vella Picual, from Organia Oleum, S.L. (93 points), a young company from the Maestrat region that started its activity in 2017.

The tasting of the V edition of the EVOOLEUM Awards brought together in Córdoba on March 6 and 7 a jury made up of 24 of the best tasters in the world from Spain, Greece, Germany, Portugal, France, United States, Argentina or Japan.

As for the BEST OF CLASS awards, that is, the best in each category of the contest, the one proclaimed as EVOOLEUM ABSOLUTE BEST, Don Gioacchino Grand Cru, also wins the awards for Best Mixture of Green and Mature Fruity, Best Monovarietal, Best of Italy, Best PDO Italy and Best Coratina.

The Best Green Fruity Award is for Rincón de la Subbética Altitude, which is also proclaimed winner of the categories Best Hojiblanca, Best of Spain and Best PDO Spain, in addition to leading the podium of the Best 3 in Organic Production, accompanied by Monini Monocultivar Coratina and Quattrociocchi Olivastro. The Best Mature Fruity is for Schinosa, while the Best Coupage is for Pruneti Intenso, a blend of Frantoio, Moraiolo, Leccio del Corno, Maurino and Cipressino.

By country, and apart from Spain and Italy, Oliveira da Serra Selecção Ouro, from Sovena Portugal Consumer Goods, S.A., is proclaimed, with 92 points, Best of Portugal; Brist Premium Delicato (BRIST D.O.O.), Best Croatia (92 points); Terra Creta Grand Cru (Terra Creta, S.A.), Best from Greece (88 points); and Olivko, from the company of the same name, Best from Tunisia (88 points). The great novelties of this edition are Novavera Hayat, from Nova Vera Gida Ve Tarim San Tic, Ltd., Best from Turkey with no less than 93 points; Marom Desert Olive Oil (Eshkolot Mishor Harochot), Best from Israel, with 88 points; and, above all, Xiangyu, from Longnan Xiangyu Olive Development Co., Ltd., Best from China with 88 points. In all three cases, these are countries with little olive tradition -except for Turkey- that, for the first time, have a presence in the EVOOLEUM Awards' TOP100. Undoubtedly, a clear example of the convening power and high level of internationalization that the best private contest in the world has achieved -according to the “The World’s Best Olive Oils” ranking- in just five years.

A TOP100 that, disaggregated by countries, confirms the hegemony of Spanish EVOOs, with a total of 73 juices; followed at a great distance by Italy, with 13; Portugal, with 4; Croatia with 3; Greece and Israel, with 2; and Turkey, Tunisia and China, with 1 representative. Within Spain, and by Autonomous Communities, in Andalusia 46 of the juices of the EVOOLEUM TOP100 are produced, with prominent role for Jaén (25) and Córdoba (15); followed by Castilla-La Mancha (14 EVOOs); Catalonia (6); Valencian Community (3); Navarra (2); and Extremadura and La Rioja (1 from each).

More than 700 samples have attended the fifth edition of EVOOLEUM Awards, which has had the participation of juices from Argentina, Austria, Croatia, USA, Spain, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey and China -the great novelty of this year-.

As usual, the 100 best EVOOs in the world according to the EVOOLEUM Awards will appear in the next edition of the EVOOLEUM World's TOP100 Extra Virgin Olive Oils Guide -of annual frequency and edited in English and Spanish, and also available in an app for iOS and Android- by means of a complete information sheet that includes its origin, characteristics, olive varieties, type of olive grove, oleotourism activities, Kosher and Halal certificates, etc., accompanied by an image of its packaging, score, tasting sheet and pairing.
