Creation of value and digitalization, main challenges of the agri-food sector in export matters

2019/24/04 - A report published by experts of the Management of Agri-Food Companies-Lafer Foundation MBA highlights that in the field of exports, the challenge of creating value remains unchanged year after year, to which digitalization now seems to join.
Thus, according to this report, the significant increase in Spanish agri-food exports in the last 10 years, "clearly above our competitors", has not been accompanied by increases in the average value of exported products.

"In the process of value creation, we should also highlight the cases of companies that in recent years have demonstrated their ability to forge a recognized brand with high added value internationally", underlined Jaime Palafox, agri-food expert and one of the drivers of this study.

Regarding trends, the report highlights that digitalisation, not only through e-commerce, is one of the star themes of the agri-food sector. However, according to Palafox, "we must place it in its proper measure because although it shows strong growth, currently it only represents 1.5% of the food market in Spain and in leading countries, such as China or South Korea, represents 2% and 19.7%, respectively."

In his opinion, "it does not seem that e-commerce is going to end traditional retail as some predict, but rather a mixed process of traditional operators going into online commerce and on-line operators going into retail , as we have already seen with the purchase of Whole Foods by Amazon."
