The International Master’s Degree in Olive Growing and Olive Oil Technology prepares its next edition

2018/12/03 - The preparation for the 13th edition of the International Master’s Degree in Olive Growing and Olive Oil Technology, which will take place during the next two academic years (2019/20 and 2020/21), is already underway. It is an international program on the cultivation of olive trees and the production of olive oil and table olives, which contributes to the training of technicians and researchers in these matters and to the development of cooperative relations among the participants.
The Master's program is jointly organized by the University of Córdoba (UCO), the Spainsh Ministry of Agriculture of the Andalusian Council, the Andalusian Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Fisheries, Food and Ecological Production (Ifapa), the International Center of High Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (Ciheam) through the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ), the Superior Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) and the National Institute of Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA), in collaboration with the International Olive Council (COI).

As reported by the IOC, the results of the previous edition of this training activity have been "encouraging" and about 20 students from eight countries had the opportunity to improve their knowledge on olive growing and olive oil technology.

Recently, Ricardo Fernández, director of the program; Jerónimo Pérez Parra, director of Ifapa; Leonardo Velasco, director of the Institute of Sustainable Agriculture, on behalf of the CSIC; Julieta Mérida, vice president of the University of Córdoba; Manuela Cerezo, on behalf of Ciheam; and Catarina Bairrao Balula, head of the Department of Technical Cooperation and Training of the IOC, met in Cordoba to take stock of the situation of this MBA.

The objective of this program is to train professionals whose profile responds to the growing demand of specialized technicians at the highest level in olive growing and fruit production. Hence, the training, both theoretical and practical, is characterized by an up-to-date content of the scientific bases and the most innovative technologies; the orientation towards obtaining quality productions; and knowledge of the economic framework of the sector, in order to make it increasingly competitive in both traditional and new markets.

Likewise, a formative period of initiation to the investigation in the field of the olivicultura and the elaiotecnia will be introduced.

The Master's program is divided into two academic years: the first that covers the Postgraduate Specialization Course and the second one of initiation to research, which culminates with the completion of the Master's Thesis.
