2014 is the Mediterranean Diet International Year, let's celebrate!

10/24/2014 - The headquarters of the European Institute of the Mediterranean Food (Ieamed) in Malaga will host on Monday, October 27th the commemoration act of the Mediterranean Diet International Year, a meeting that will involve eight prestigious Andalusian chefs who are committed to following the guidelines this type of gastronomy.
Therefore, Spanish chefs Borja Arenas, Israel Ramos, Celia Jiménez, Juan Andrés Morilla, Xanty Elías, Juan Carlos Trujillo, Diego del Río and Willy Moya will be responsible for translating, through the sum of its creations, the union of the territories that share these eating habits despite the distance between them.

The recipes that these chefs will execute are a sample of the many possibilities offered by this traditional diet of the Mediterranean Basin which achieves its singling through the creations of chefs, as reported by the Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture.

The Ieamed has worked for ten years in the study, promotion and dissemination of this diet and of the Andalusian food in general as guarantors of health and quality, organizing numerous initiatives to promote the Mediterranean Diet such as international conferences and the publication of guides concerning themes such as the Mediterranean Gastonomy, among many others.

Among the attendees will be the managing Director of the Agency for the Management of Agriculture and Fisheries of Andalusia, Catalina Madueño, responsible for opening the act; the Director of Food Industry, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Magrama), Fernando Burgaz; the President of the Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Food Science, Lluis Serra; and the President of the Andalusia Gastronomic Association Gastroarte, Fernando Rueda.

Through the organization of this event, which will be closed by the Andalusian Minister of Agriculture, Elena Víboras, Andalusia adds to the activities organized by various organizations throughout 2014 to commemorate the Mediterranean Diet International Year.

This is the case of the Mediterranean Olive Oil Cities Network (ReCOMed), which has launched the contest named "A menu for the Mediterranean Diet Day" aimed at food bloggers who should propose a "Mediterranean Style" menu to commemorate day November 16, date on which the Mediterranean Diet was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Through this event, organized by ReCOMed in collaboration with the Mediterranean Diet Forum, bloggers will have to propose a menu with three different recipes (starter, main course and dessert) based on the principles and values of the Mediterranean Diet.

In this sense, the recipes should include characteristic ingredients of such food and extra virgin olive oil from any country that is part of ReCOMed. In addition, participant's menus will be published in the author's web site or blog after the deadline for the competition, which has been extended until October 27th.

ReCOMed reported that the American journalist and writer Tom Mueller, author of Extra Virginity, will be responsible for delivering the first prize in this contest.
